Champions League: Real Madrid 3-3 Manchester City (agg 3-3) - Real Madrid win on away goals

Remarkable fightback from City but Real Madrid progress

City battle back from two goals down to force extra time and edge a thrilling tie

Manchester City have been knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid on away goals after a pulsating quarter-final second leg at the Bernabeu on Wednesday.

Real Madrid won the tie 3-3 on aggregate, after extra time and two stunning comebacks, which leaves City facing a third successive year without a major trophy.

Rodrygo scored twice in the final minutes of the second half of normal time to cancel out goals from Kevin de Bruyne and Gabriel Jesus and force extra time.

Karim Benzema then scored in the first half of extra time to put Real Madrid ahead on aggregate for the first time in a tie which had swung back and forth throughout.

City managed one last push, with Bernardo Silva scoring in the 90th minute to give them a lifeline. However, Real Madrid held out to progress to the last four and are still in the hunt for their 14th European Cup.

The game was end-to-end throughout, with both teams creating chances but it was Real Madrid who started the brightest.

Vinicius Junior was a constant threat down the left flank and he almost gave Real Madrid the lead in the 12th minute, but his shot was tipped over by Ederson.

City gradually grew into the game and they took the lead in the 20th minute when De Bruyne curled a stunning shot into the top corner.

Real Madrid responded well and they equalised in the 26th minute when Dani Carvajal crossed for Vinicius Junior, who volleyed home.

The second half was just as entertaining as the first, with both teams attacking at will.

City thought they had won it when Jesus tapped home from close range in the 73rd minute, but Rodrygo equalised again in the 89th minute with a stunning volley.

And the Brazilian forward completed his hat-trick in the 91st minute to send the Bernabeu crowd wild.

City pushed for a winner in extra time, but Real Madrid defended valiantly and Benzema's goal in the 95th minute proved to be the decisive moment.

Real Madrid will now face Chelsea in the semi-finals, while City will have to lick their wounds and focus on the Premier League title race.
